Premier Daniel Andrews:

On Tuesday the 19th of March Premier Daniel Andrews mourned to victims of the Christchurch mosque terror attack in the Victorian Parliament. In his speech, Andrews offered his sincerer condolences to the families, friends and loved ones of the innocent victims whose lives were tragically taken in this attack. Andrews further went on to say that ‘today on behalf of our Parliament, on behalf of our state I would like to begin by expressing my deepest sympathy and solidarity with those families and with Victoria’s Muslim communities and communities around the world’ More importantly, the premier emphasised that there is no religion or no race to terror rather it is motivated by evil. The Premier ended his speech by affirming his full support to the Muslim Community and stating that this horrible event should unite us more than ever before. In addition, the Premier moved a proposal to condemn Senator Fraser Annings remarks, all parties united in support for this motion and labelled his comments as hateful, dangerous, and divisive.

Opposition Leader Michael O’Brien:

In his opening remarks, O’Brien started his speech with a quote from Martin Luther King Jr ‘Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that’. O’Brien described the events as act of greater evil than the massacre of innocent men, women and children at prayer, an act of both indescribable hatred and unutterable cowardice. O’Brien like the premier offered his condolences to the victims of this terror attacks and ended with by echoing Martin Luther king’s words ‘ we respond with light and with love’. O’Brien also congratulated people like Abdul Aziz whose courage led him to pick up a credit card machine and throw it to the gunman and chase him to his car, saving countless lives.

Greens Leader Samantha Ratnam:

The Greens Leader rose to mourn the families, friends and loved ones of the 50 people in Christchurch who were so cruelly taken from this world. Ratnam further said that ‘they were killed in an act of terrorism perpetrated against a Muslim community. I know that words cannot express the horror and grief that has been experienced, but know that we stand beside each one of you in sorrow and in anguish. We vow to honour the lives of those you have lost and support our Muslim communities, near and far away’. Ratnam ended her speech by stating ‘let us ensure that we do everything we possibly can to prevent one more life being lost. We owe that to all those who have lost their lives, those whose lives were so cruelly taken away. We owe it to their families and friends. We owe it to the future’.

The first Muslim Women in the Victorian Parliament, Ms Natalie Suleyman:

In her opening remarks, Ms Suleyman condemned the attacks to hundreds of worshippers at the Al Noor Mosque and Linwood Islamic Centre in Christchurch. Suleyman went further to say that Imam Gamal Fouda was delivering a sermon to the congregation who were quiet in prayer. Their silence was shattered by the horror that was beginning to unfold a day that cut the lives of 50 people, and maybe more. She mentioned 3 year old Mucad Ibrahim the youngest victim of Friday’s attack, Mucad was the innocent face of this attack. Suleyman also said that ‘our hearts are broken, and we know that terror has no boundaries. We have also seem the rise of terror attacks in places of worship, including the synagogue attack in Pittsburgh, the bombings of churches in Egypt on Palm Sunday and a man driving into a crowd of Muslim worshippers leaving mosque in England. In concluding, Suleyman stated ‘I send my prayers and du’as to the victims’ families. May Allah grant you patience to mourn. To those who are injured, I pray that you have the strength to recover. As the journey has begun for the lives that are lost, we hope that their last words were: ‘I testify that there is no God but Allah. And Mohammed is the Messenger of Allah. To Allah we belong and to Allah we return. Peace be upon you’

Katie Hall MP:

Katie spoke today with a heavy heart and labelled the attack as cowardly and hateful. Katie emphasised that the people of Footscray share this heartbreak as she passed her heartbreak to the Muslim community. Ahead of Harmony day she highlighted the good work the Australia Light Foundation and how it connects members of the Islamic community through worship, social activities, and education, welfare and employment programs. She emphasised that the Light Foundation also do charity work around the globe, she looks forward to attending the Friday prayers this week.
